At the age of 17, Heidi has to enroll in the German Army and leave her family home in Austria. She has no idea if she would live to see her parents again. Her youth is spent under the dark sky of the Second World War and its endless dangers. Under the enormous pressure of the army’s rules, the bombings and the continuous fear for her life, Heidi does not give up on the hope for a normal life. She looks for friendship, compassion, and love in a world that had lost its human values. Many times she asks herself the same frightening question would she be able to stay alive?
The book is based on a true story of a family whose destiny, as many others’, was to live in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Life Under The Dark Sky eBook Diana Branisteanu

Life Under The Dark Sky is indeed as the title says--ordinary life and the simple dreams of happiness of a young woman in a small Austrian village in a world quickly darkened by the clouds of war. Diana Branisteanu's story follows Heidi from her days as a rather strong willed girl through the pre-war years, the take over of Austria by Germany, the deepening of the horror of war and then the years that followed Nazi Germany's defeat, the occupation of Austria by the Red Army until the day Heidi leaves the Old World for the new one. The author's style is exactly what is needed to show the slow, subtle, almost creeping advance of the tragedy, sorrow and loss that war brings upon a young woman and a whole generation of young people barely out of their childhood. The story provides beautifully the transition and phases in Heidi's life from incomprehension, denial of reality, attempt to live in spite of it, escape in love, pretty dresses and parties, all along living in a tunnel, isolated in the radio room of her army unit, until all attempts to `normal' are shattered by death and loss, and the brutality of the Nazi and then Russian occupation. Heidi is endowed with a great gift--she's a survivor and makes the choice to survive unlike so many others who froze in the glare of the horror. It is a story that lingers in one's mind and heart.

Also the author shows extensive knowledge of the war years and its history, but also has an eye for details of every day life that makes the world around Heidi real to the reader. I understand that this is Branisteanu's first novel and it is a biographical one. I think we should expect from this author a second novel, perhaps this one based on her own experiences, which I think are equally interesting.

Life Under The Dark Sky eBook Diana Branisteanu Reviews

Diana Branisteanu tried to write an "interesting, moving and meaningful" novel (as she confesses at the end of the book) and she succeeded in every respects. Heidi - the main character - is a strong, brave woman who fights the "dark sky" of the Second World War and discovers that "life is worth living". It is a story whose excellence recommends it in its own right. But it is also valuable as it reflects the life and the aspirations of the author's mother-in-law's experience, caught up in a war cataclysm. Reality and imagination gave birth to a vivid, vigorous text, with suspense and atmosphere, which maintains the reader's interest so unfalteringly over so many pages.
This book is the story of the life of a young Austrian who was forced to work for the Nazi's in World War 2. Well written book especially how she and her family tried to get from the Russians as they entered Austria.
Great read! Can't wait for the other two books to be published in English.
Gives you an interesting look at the things peolple have to do when there is a war going on. Good character development.
Nice reading a different perspective of the war.
Bit of advice... get a better editor. Having to stumble through the bad editing made the read less enjoyable.
This book dose a fantastic job of making you feel like you were right there! You can picture your self going through all those experiences of happiness, love, confusion, and fear. This is an easy read, and also one that you just can't put down untill it's finished. You will feel just as if you were this seventeen year old going through a war of this magnitude. Most of us, including myself, have no idea. This is not a story told by the Generals that gave the orders. This is what went on with average enlisted person on the ground where all the battles were still to be fought. The human side of the war is what you experience. We always hear of courage of certain pilots and other officers. Well here is the story of courage and sacrifice, and for the love of life. A must read for all ages.
The story line is interesting, however the writing of the dialog is pretty amatur. Unlike some free books that I just delete because they are just that bad, this book is keeping me reading due to wanting to know what happens to the main characters.
